However after the 1991 Gulf War, where the HMMWV proved itself well, Chinese authorities changed their mind. In the mid 1990s a couple of civilian Hummers were purchased in USA and imported to China. These were examined and reverse engineered. By 2003 two Chinese clones were ready. One of them was SAC SFQ2040. Another was Dongfeng EQ2050. Both of these vehicles heavily relied on copied US-made parts, such as chassis, gearbox and even engine. In 2004 a total of 57 EQ2050 vehicles were sent to the PLA for trials and evaluation. Eventually it was accepted to service with the Chinese army. First production EQ2050 vehicles were delivered to special forces units. Its competitor, the SAC SFQ2040 never reached production. Later a third HMMWV clone appeared. The Xiaolong XL2060 has more differences from the American HMMWV than the previous two.
The Dongfeng EQ2050 is based on civilian AM General Hummer H1. It has a redesigned exterior in order to look different from the HMMWV.
